Video 2 of 2 of the air conditioners and heat pumps at my work. The units in this video consist of 5 Janitrols and 3 Tranes.
Among these is the Trane Executive High-Efficiency Weathertron heat pump that I got requests to make an up-close video of. Upon closer inspection, I found out that Trane was manufactured in January 1988, and I do not think it is operational at the moment.
I can distinguish the two smaller Janitrols as heat pumps because I can see the reversing valves, but the other three have their “guts” concealed in a cabinet at the rear of the unit so I am unable to tell. All 5 Janitrols are from the mid-90s
The two larger Tranes seem
to be straight-cool units. One is from 2002 and one is from 1988.
Enjoy!

Well its another edition of Japan Tech and this time I got a great Air Conditioning system for cheap. You can spend several thousand after installation and shipping. This is in regards to the split system units with a compressor outside and an air handling unit inside. I however went for the window unit with a little twist and fitted it to the sliding glass door. Almost all windows in Japan either crank open or the majority slide to the side. I almost never see the western style windows that move up and down. So the window units are all vertical. A do it yourself person can install a window unit and save money especially if you may have to move. Not hiring someone to charge and or drain the split system of freon can save money.
Japan is an innovator in modern compact air conditioners and the small split systems sold in Japan are becoming more commonplace in the west as the larger bulky central air systems are expensive to buy and less efficient and very expensive to install. Both types of Japanese systems are super efficient and have loads of features depending on how much you invest. The maintenance on even the economical models is very low. Features include fully tweakable humidification, dehumidification, reverse pump heating, ionization, air cleaning and self cleaning modes. The actual design of the units make them very user friendly when it comes to popping the covers off and wiping the insides out..

One June 25, 2009, the Carrier 13 SEER A/C unit was the victim of a nailgun-related mishap. This was a mistake on the part of a roofer, and the unit will more than likely be replaced. This unit is not even a year old, and guess what, my friend’s mom is gonna let me take it apart once the new unit has been installed!
I got a request for it, and here it is; the large-capacity window air-conditioner unit at my friend’s 3,500 square foot home. I have another video on YouTube, which features just the central A/C unit at this same house:
Again, the home is 3,500 square feet and was built in 1969. The second floor has the Carrier central air, and the downstairs has the Sharp window unit featured in this video. The heat is from a gas-fired boiler. Also featured is a video of my friend’s dog.

Went to home depot to get stuff for a class project and saw a badly damaged GE 27-inch wall oven in the kitchen section. Also, on display at this home depot is an apparently mislabeled Trane XLi condensing unit. The front label says “XL14i” and the label on the back says “XL13i”. The unit was manufactured 7 years ago.

Fired up the central air in the nursing home’s basement and made a video of it. It is a Carrier split-system, made in 1992. I was told that it was a heat pump, but after reading the spec. label, I believe it is just a straight-cool A/C unit with a standard electric heater integrated into the air handler. I believe it is an air handler with electric heat, but it may be an electric furnace. I am not sure.
UPDATE: It has been brought to my attention that there is something wrong with the 1992 Carrier unit. The lines are literally freezing over.
The other unit featured in this video is the old Carrier “Round One”.
UPDATE: (4/27/09) The problem causing the “frosty lines” was diagnosed, and in fact there were two problems. Problem number one was that there a loose wire and the blower was working intermittently. The second problem is that both condenser in outdoor unit, and the fan coil in the air handler were absolutely filthy. Thank you everybody for input!
Also, I have been given the okay to take apart the “Round One”. Expect a video of this very soon.

http://www.homemadepowerplant.com/?hop=adonpub Les Hamasaki, developer of a ten ton solar absorption chiller air conditioner system, at Debs Park Audubon Environmental Center in Los Angeles, explains that his AC unit uses lithium bromide which is safe and not dangerous to the environment like conventional AC units which use ozone-destroying CFCs. His solar AC unit utilizes solar absorption chiller thermal heat pipe technology, which has been around some time, and is easy and cost effective to produce.
