Branch and MOS question [Military]?
Right now I’m 16 years old, but I already graduated high school. The minute I turn 17, I plan on joining the service. I’m not sure which branch to join or which MOS so I’ll give you a little details and you can give me your opinions.
- I have no desire for money (I don’t even care if I get paid, as long as I can make a living). I also don’t care about living conditions, benefits, etc.
- I plan on making a career out of the service.
- I don’t have a family to support so I don’t mind being away for very long periods of time.
- I’m generally physically fit (I have 5-6 months to get even more fit), but I’m a little unsure of my swimming abilities. I can swim, but I never timed myself and I cannot time myself or practice now because I don’t have access to a pool.
- I need adventure (I will not do an office job) and I love being outdoors. I also have a large interest in wilderness survival along with some intermediate skills. I also love climbing / caving, canoeing / kayaking / rafting, hiking / backpacking, etc.
-I’m very flexible and generally smart. I’m not good with mechanics, electronics, automotive, or shop information; but I’m pretty good with everything else.
- Call my suicidal, but I really don’t care if I live or die. Now I don’t WANT to die, but my personal opinion of the matter is "if I’m dead, I won’t care, because I’ll be dead."
I’m not all too interested in the Coast Guard because of the lack of adventure. Being a rescue swimmer would be cool, but if I didn’t make it, I would be stuck with a less adventurous job.
The Navy has two jobs that interest me: the Navy Seals and being a Navy Diver. As I said before, I’m unsure of my swimming abilities.
The Air Force has several jobs, but most of them require you to be half-decent in swimming. I’m not sure of my swimming abilities. They also have a program called SERE which I could physically do, but there are only several hundred SERE specialists and that worries me because if I don’t make it, I may be stuck with a job that I may despise.
The Marines have one job that interests me and that’s infantry (along with Force Recon) but I heard that it’s not a good idea to try to make a career out of Marine infantry. If I was infantry, I would want to advance, but I read / heard that it’s harder to get into schools (airborne, Ranger, etc.) in the Marines because of lack of space.
I’m a little worried about the Army because the Army’s infantry and Special Forces requires a CO (combat operator) score of 90 and 98 respectively. A CO requires auto and shop knowledge which I don’t have.
What’s your opinion on what I should do? Ask if you have ANY questions.
Thanks.
Cav. Scout requires a CO score of 90 (same as infantry). I’m a little worried about not making it because I’m not really good in auto and shop.

I would go Special Forces or Cav Scout. Do not worry about the scores. I do not know a thing about auto or shop and I scored higher than that. Plus, you can always get waivers for things like that. My MOS requires you to have a 110 GT score but there are Soldiers that have 80s…so again, do not worry. Good luck!
A good line of work to go into after the military?
you should look into Air Force TACP or Combat Control, that seems like something you might be interested in

How about US Army 19D? Armored Cavalry Reconnaissance or Cav Scout for short.
Don’t worry about the CO score. You’d be suprised at how mechanically un-inclined some crewmembers were.

the only thing i can suggest that hasn’t already been said here is infantry

By everything that you said here I would recommend a few options. First forget about the SEALS . Sere program is POW training school which stands for Survival Evade Resist Extraction program. This program is offered to SOCOM personnel mainly. You would have to be stupid to do it any other way since its not gonna make a difference if you have gone through it or not. If you like adventure enlist in the Marine Corps for 4 years and go as a Grunt 0311 Infantry man if you dont like infantry then go with something simple like communications 0621 or something. All you need is your foot in the door. Once in you can go for a reconnaisance screening and see if you are tough enough to make it to recon training. From there you can go to jump school, dive school, Sere training etc. Believe me if you dont know how to swim and are looking for an adventure nothing beats the Corps. I wouldnt recommend seals for you since they mostly do water based Amphibious operations and have a success rate of staying concealed about 0.1 percent. Or go wild and go to sniper school maybe they will send you on a suicide mission not too long after your training ends and then you can be on your own.

In the military
If you pass the ASVAB, you will almost assuredly have a CO score that will allow you to enlist as Infantryman. I am biased toward the Army and Infantry, which seems like the perfect fit for you too. With the information you provided, I would tell you to go Army and Airborne-Ranger. It is the most challenging entry level position a 17 year old male in today’s military can enlist into. I know some will say Marines and their is nothing wrong with the Marines, but it is amazing how they can say they are ‘First In’ when the Rangers secured the area the night before! If you want to be pushed to your limit, trained on the latest weapons and jump out of planes, 11X Option 40. Last, even though the money is not important to you right now, take EVERY penny that the Army will give you. Get promoted before you leave for training and invest anything you do not use. If a year from now you still do not want it, give it to me for my terrific advice.
