Navy or Airforce?
I was arguing with my brother about this issue.
If a military contractor like Boeing or Lockheed Martin built a big military spaceship for the United States, would it go to the Navy or the Airforce. I thought it would go to the Navy because the Navy has experience with compression and decompression and having air tight ships. A submarine basically has the same conditions as a spaceship. Plus its a ship that would have to allow people to live in it for a long time. Navy has ships and experience with those situations. Airforce doesn’t. If a base was built on the moon, then I think it would be given to the airforce and they could keep small fighters and other aircraft there. But large carriers and other large ships I think would go to the Navy. Do you agree with me or with my brother? What do you think???

What is this saying?I am lost i know one of the airlines is buying the other i think.?
i would quess the air force. they have the space command. plus most all astronauts are air force officers. i think. i don’t know. whatever. something of that size would probably be a joint operation anyway.

Definitely Air Force. The Navy, as you said, does have more experience with your subs and so on and so forth. However, the AF has had a much greater number of members go on into NASA and other space programs. The USAFA also bosts a much higher curriculum then USNA.

Hate to tell you, but the Air Force has a space program.. They’d get the spaceship more than likely.
Besides, it’s the AIR FORCE. Spaceships fly, don’t they? lol…
Interesting question though.

Most Sci-Fi shows treat space fleets like the Navy. A great example is Battlestar Galactica which is a rather realistic portrayal of how the command for space carriers could work.
I agree that it makes perfect sense for a space fleet to be considered Navy. The reasons that you listed are all very good, like compression and decompression, submarines, etc. But also, think of carrier groups. That is the logical layout that would be used in space. Several vessels operating in close proximity, each with their own role and importance.
The Air Force operates with a different goal than a Navy. Air Force operations are to achieve air superiority so that they can keep the skies clear of the enemies and bombard ground units. They use the terrain to their advantage and so forth.
Navies operate in empty areas, with nothing but ocean around them for as far as the eye can see. They are the backbone of any modern military offensive because the Navy can move ships that act as fully operational air bases, wherever you need them. Imagine if there were no land masses on Earth, that would represent space and would make the Navy even more potent, there would be nowhere that it couldn’t reach. You could have a forward base of operations anywhere that you wanted.
Crew members would have limited mobility, and could be confined to their ship for weeks to months at a time.
Does that sound like the Air Force to you? It doesn’t to me.
The only logical application that the Air Force could have for a space program would be space-based fighter-interceptors stationed at places other than ships.
Also, the Navy would lose much of its importance if we could suddenly bombard targets from orbit, so it’s logical that its evolution would take it into outer space, whereas the Air Force could still be used to defend cities and planets.
I agree that at the moment the Air Force would be more suitable to command a spaceship, however as we assembled a huge fleet, it only makes sense that the operations and tactics of the ships would follow the Navy.
So even if the Air Force retained control of the fleet, it would have to use the Navy’s principles, which defeats the purpose of having the Air Force command it.
The Navy could also act like the modern American military as well. The Air Force could operate ships that would defend planets, the Navy could project power to other solar systems and planets and form blockades to safeguard home planets, systems, etc. And the Marines could represent an invasion fleet with the purpose of invading foreign planets and systems, with the Navy watching their backs and the Air Force guarding other areas.

I would hope that either of them would be leery of using Boeing with it’s history of corruption and kickbacks.

Guys, guys, who has more astronauts? Navy of course, check me out! Allen Shepherd, John Glenn, Jim Lovell, Neil Armstrong to name a few and current shuttle astronauts are US Navy or Marine Corps.
And what about Star Trek, it was the USS Enterprise of which we have a carrier with that name.
Go Navy!

As I learned on a recent visit to the 20th Space Command (USAF) the Navy is completely out of the space business. All navy space command assets have been turned over to the USAF. Navy pilots can still become astronauts, but any military space operations belong to the Air Force.
Go Air Force!! Sink Navy!!
