how to read an electical appliance schematic?

mostly interested in Air Conditioning systems ( carrier )
ok, I,m taking a class on hvac, the teacher has given us a schematic, no model number, said it was a common example.We will be tested on voltage drops , switch on or off ? component working or not ? So my question is , what is the best way to break down the schematic , follow each line and convert to a ladder type drawing ? Some of the circuits seem to have mutiple paths depending on whether a certain switch is on or off. Thanks
