My air conditioning has been running for hours, is that normal?

For the first time this winter, I started using the a.c. But it’s been running for about 3 hours or so. Is that normal since it was super cold in our home? If it doesn’t stop, how do I make it auto. There’s no switch to tell it to be on auto or not. Should I turn it off for the night and turn it back on in the morning? 10 points to the best answer, thanks!

    put the switch on the thermostat on heat fan on auto
