Stupid Builders = VERY Scary Rooftop Air Conditioner Access!

Check this out. Possibly the WORST 2 story rooftop Air Conditioner setup EVER in the Pheonix/Scottsdale, AZ area!

This is at the 7700 E Indian School Rd area of Scottsdale, AZ.
These are two story rooftops. The Air Conditioners are on these steep pitched rooftops with NO catwalk to stand on while servicing (which is required by code). These are designed so retarded that they have a lower roof level that is at about a 5/12 pitch and they expect you to place your 20+ foot ladder on it and hope it doesn’t slide of as you climb almost 20 feet higher to reach the second story rooftop that is also about a 5/12 pitch!

I can only wonder how the fack this sh*t even left the drafting board and became a reality???
Seriously. Throughout the planning and building of these abortions, NO ONE stepped up and thought this was a BAD and UNSAFE setup???

I am still trying to understand which it is in this area between the builders and city/county officials. Is it Corruption, Incompetance, or BOTH???

What will save more money? Air on or Auto?

We live in a double wide mobile home that is about 12 years old. Mom is a single parent with one job and tries her best to support the family. What is the best setting for the Air Conditioning system and to help us save money this summer. Our last bill was close to $400. Should it be set on Auto or On? What temperature also?

The auto/on switch controls the fan. When set on "on," the fan is on all of the time, while the "auto" setting uses the fan to circulate air only when the system is either heating or cooling. The former setting uses more electricity for the fan, but in rare instances, constantly circulating the air keeps the thermostat’s area from heating up more often, which can save energy.

The best way to save on your cooling bill, though, is to replace your thermostat with one that allows you to keep the house warmer when no one is there, but begin cooling it down again about a half hour before you get home in the evening. They can be bought at any home improvement store and can be installed by anyone who can follow instructions and use simple tools.

What does the author mean?

The article is at the website below

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/30/us/30album.html

The article says: "the Carrier Corporation, an industrial air-
conditioning manufacturer and the financial anchor of Warren County, had just announced it was shutting its profitable plant and shipping many of the 1,300 jobs to Mexico".

MY QUESTION IS: What type of profits does the writer refer to? Who benefited from the plant closure?

Interesting -
well the profits would be the money the company makes from its Air Conditioning equipment, etc. I would have to say that Mexico benefited by the closure of the plant - bringing jobs there - and I would assume that the company benefits by having a lower costs in producing its product… Pat

A good line of work to go into after the military?

Before i start my question i must stress to you i would only like you to answer my question & do not need an opinion on my partner leaving the Royal Marines & if you have anything bad or rude to say all you need to do is click out of my question & move onto the next. Really not that hard to do. I am very sorry to start like that but i have had rude comments left about my man wanting to leave the military & i find it upsetting.

My partner has joined the royal marines & is in his 3rd week but has decided to leave on the grounds he is too far away from myself & my daughter so is coming home. Our only concerns are which line of job will he do. He is 22 & was fitting Air Conditioning before the Royal Marines which he could go back into but hates. He is looking into the fire service but not recruiting at the mo & becoming a fitness instructor but not as challenging as he would want. Are there any other suggestions?

Again i don’t wish to hear judgement on on him leaving the marines i just want suggestion for a new job with the same drive as the military.
Thanks : )
police force he has a criminal conviction that was under 5years ago. i believe any spent convictions need to be 5years or older. Thanks
Just to add to a comment. I am totally fine for money & my daughter is not my parners so he has no obligation to provide for her. He has taken her on as a fantastic man like him self would but i sort my own money out & good at it too. Like i said don’t pass judgment on something you know nothing about to the comment who said i should learn my mistake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t quite get this, You do realize that the forces are now favourable to supplying married quarters to partners as well as married couples. To say I know nothing about this type of situation
is totally wrong, I am ex forces, my son is currently taking part in Panthers Claw and has two lovely children and although not being
with their mother any longer, He sees them quite often when he is in the U.K. So I hope you understand why I say "I don’t quite get this".

Which is more energy-efficient: a hollow-core door or a solid wood exterior door w/ 10 glass panes?

We want to replace a low-quality hollow-core door in our 1899 cottage with an antique solid exterior-rated door with 10 panes of beveled glass but are concerned about energy-efficiency.

We live in San Francisco and almost never use heating and never use Air Conditioning. We both agree that the door with the panes would be much more attractive.

I think that the glass-paned door could provide us with passive solar heating through the panes (we don’t have any windows on that side of the house), but my sweetie thinks that the heat loss from the panes would negate any solar heating effect.

Is the hollow-core door more energy-efficient than the solid door with glass? And if so, how much more? Or is weatherstripping more of an issue?

Thanks!

R-Value is the measure of the resistance of heat flow through a particular product. There are window panes out there that can give you a higher r factor than some hc doors. But, since your cottage is from 1899 realistically it won’t make much difference. A house built today will have, usually, an R-11 wall, most windows today will be an R-4 or so. A house built in 1899 did not have standards like these of today. See below:

But to answer the question, I would compromise, and get a door with glass at the top which would give you light and satisfy your husband as well. A HC door does not provide much insulation at all. You were right about the weatherstripping though, a door or window that doesn’t have good airtight seals will lose more than just having a glass or HC door.
